Key Safety Guidelines for the Use of Cryogenic Liquid Oxygen Storage Tanks
Category: Industry News
Date: 2022-08-25
The primary functions of cryogenic storage tanks are to fill and store cryogenic liquids. To ensure the safe operation of such tanks, it is essential to comprehensively consider factors including the hazardous properties of the stored gases, the effectiveness of cryogenic insulation, the surrounding environmental conditions, and the characteristics of the pressure vessel, and to implement appropriate technical and managerial measures.
The primary functions of cryogenic storage tanks are to fill and store cryogenic liquids. To ensure the safe operation of such tanks, it is essential to comprehensively consider factors including the hazardous properties of the stored gases, the effectiveness of cryogenic insulation, the surrounding environmental conditions, and the characteristics of pressure vessels, and to implement appropriate technical and management measures.
1. Personnel performing work on cryogenic storage tanks shall thoroughly understand the structural features of the equipment and its piping and valve systems, be well acquainted with the hazardous properties of cryogenic liquids, strictly monitor the surrounding environmental conditions, and carry out operations in accordance with the safe operating procedures for cryogenic liquid storage tanks. Such personnel must have completed training and passed the assessment conducted by a quality and technical supervision authority at or above the prefectural level and hold a pressure vessel operator qualification certificate before being permitted to assume their duties. Prior to commencing work, personnel shall implement the prescribed occupational safety and protective measures.
2. When operating cryogenic storage tanks, the “Safety Rules for the Operation of Cryogenic Liquid Storage and Transportation Equipment” (JB6898-1997) must be strictly observed, and daily safety management must be strengthened. During the storage of cryogenic liquids, the filling ratio shall not exceed 0.95; overfilling is strictly prohibited. Prior to putting a cryogenic liquid storage tank into service, it is essential to ensure that the vessel is tightly sealed, that all accessories—including valves, instruments, and safety devices—are complete, functional, and responsive, that the piping materials are appropriately selected, and that the system interior is dry and free of oil contamination.
3 During normal operation of the cryogenic storage tank, a dedicated person shall be responsible for conducting routine inspections. The pressure inside the inner vessel must not exceed the tank’s maximum allowable working pressure; if overpressure occurs, pressure‑relief measures must be implemented. Verify the position and leakage condition of all valves; if any abnormality or leakage is detected, take prompt corrective action to properly address the issue.
4. Regularly check the vacuum level in the jacket of the cryogenic storage tank; if the vacuum deteriorates, take measures to re‑evacuate the tank (vacuum pumping of cryogenic storage tanks should be carried out by a specialized contractor or the original manufacturer).
